How have urban centers contributed to food justice and sovereignty movements? What is the history of the black freedom movement?
Toli Moli x Duende District x Dreaming Out Loud present:
A Book Signing & Talk with Dr. Monica M. White, author of Freedom Farmers, at Union Market
Wednesday, April 3, 2019 - 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Dr. Monica M. White's recent release, Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement, expands the historical narrative about the work and contributions of southern black farmers, the organizations they founded, and the black freedom struggle. Agriculture is often viewed as an exploitative, oppressive site for black people by current scholars. On the contrary, Dr. White's Freedom Farmers sets up an historical foundation with nuanced context, illuminating how urban centers have contributed to food justice and sovereignty movements.
The first African American woman to earn tenure in both the College of Agricultural Life Sciences and the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. White's research investigates communities of color and grassroots organizations in sustainable, community food systems as a strategy to respond to issues of hunger and food inaccessibility.
We are very pleased to present Dr. White in conversation with Zachari Curtis, Supply Chain Manager for Dreaming Out Loud, and the farmer at the helm of Good Sense Farm & Apiary. Zachari is also cofounder of the Community Farming Alliance and built a Sustainable Agriculture program at Bread for the City.
