Want to learn to play games of mahjong like a Crazy Rich Asian?

What is mahjong?

Mahjong is a game commonly played with four players and special tiles originating in China during the Qing dynasty. Now played all over the world and most widespread in Eastern and South Eastern Asia, this skillful game of strategy is sometimes compared to rummy, the Western card matching game.

Become an expert in reading minds and faces using more than 100 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. Draw or "rob" a piece from another player. Enjoy a Burmese meal, make new friends, or act quickly and buy out the whole table!

What to expect:

Join Toli Moli all Mondays in May for a special AAPI Heritage Month weekly game night. At each two-hour event, expect a full lesson and a supper social at the bodega. Start your evening with a mahjong lesson (beginner friendly, all levels welcome) where we break down the game from 5-6 p.m., and then from 6-7 p.m. enjoy some open practice and free play with a full meal from our Burmese kitchen!

Perfect for singles, pairs, or groups of four. So, bring your #bodegabae or just yourself and learn how to play this centuries old game in an environment that is entertaining, educational, and full of laughter.

An Evening with "Freedom Farmers" Author Dr. Monica White

How have urban centers contributed to food justice and sovereignty movements? What is the history of the black freedom movement?

Toli Moli x Duende District x Dreaming Out Loud present:

A Book Signing & Talk with Dr. Monica M. White, author of Freedom Farmers, at Union Market

Wednesday, April 3, 2019 - 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Dr. Monica M. White's recent release, Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement, expands the historical narrative about the work and contributions of southern black farmers, the organizations they founded, and the black freedom struggle. Agriculture is often viewed as an exploitative, oppressive site for black people by current scholars. On the contrary, Dr. White's Freedom Farmers sets up an historical foundation with nuanced context, illuminating how urban centers have contributed to food justice and sovereignty movements.

The first African American woman to earn tenure in both the College of Agricultural Life Sciences and the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. White's research investigates communities of color and grassroots organizations in sustainable, community food systems as a strategy to respond to issues of hunger and food inaccessibility.

We are very pleased to present Dr. White in conversation with Zachari Curtis, Supply Chain Manager for Dreaming Out Loud, and the farmer at the helm of Good Sense Farm & Apiary. Zachari is also cofounder of the Community Farming Alliance and built a Sustainable Agriculture program at Bread for the City.

This event is free to attend with RSVP via Eventbrite. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.

Free tickets include entry to the event. $35 tickets include a signed copy of the book and a $5 credit to redeem 1 *special price* falooda (Burmese layered dessert drink - $7 value) or an equal value of any combination of beverages + snacks from the Toli Moli Burmese Bodega.
